Book Club

I've been a member of my workplace book club since January of this year. I'm ashamed that it took me so long to join, but I'm now very happy to be there every month.

A couple of months ago, my dear colleague Karen Morse left us to move to greener pastures. She had been the fearless leader of our book club, and I took over from her very capable hands.

We're now at the point of needing to select books to read for the next couple of years. The following categories were developed a couple of years ago, and I think we're going to stick with them. We will identify books for each category, and then put it up for vote by all members of the Library staff.

I need you!!! If you have any suggestions for any of these categories, I'd love it if you could add it in comments. Thank you so much!

Now, the categories:
  • Biographies & Memoirs
  • Classics and Contemporary Classics
  • General Fiction (non-genre)
  • General Nonfiction
  • Graphic Novels
  • Historical Fiction
  • Mystery/Thriller/Horror
  • SciFi and Fantasy
  • Women's Fiction (formerly romance)
  • World Literature (formerly literary fiction)
  • Young Adult

Off the top of my head for the YA category I'd recommend - The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
Also, some of the newer YA novels - Dievergent by Veronica Roth. Die For Me by Amy Plum (I personally loved this one. Great new mythology)
And The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare.

These are some of my favourite books. I hope you like them. It's a varied collection, but I loved -for different reasons- each and every one of them.

A Tale of Love and Darkness by Amos Oz
Recipe for Love Trilogy by Louisa Edwards (Romance/Women's Lit, with chefs! And a gay couple)
The Perks of being a Wallflower - Stephen Chbosky
Malibu & Ewe Trilogy by Christie Ridgway
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. (you'll be surprised at how many people have not read this one)

I can't think of others right now. I'll be back.

For SciFi, I recommend anything by Ursula LeGuin. People may already be familiar with The Left Hand of Darkness and The Disposessed, but perhaps not The Telling (published in 2000). All her stories are great fodder for discussion.

I think The Telling would be great for a book club. Amazon has a "Look inside" link link to whet your appetite. :)

For an addition to fiction, I would recommend "The Third Angel" by Alice Hoffman or anything by her. Her characters are woven into a complex but not complicated storylines, and I just enjoy her style so much. Happy Reading!

Historical fiction: LeGuin again. One recent book (2009) was based on two lines of the Aneid, about Aeneas' second wife Lavinia. Book is called ... wait for it... Lavinia. (Amazon has a Look Inside for this too, btw.)

PS - I'd recommend some of her mainstream fiction too, but you'd think I'm working on commission, heh!
